In the spotlight

In the spotlight: Haven

  • Published: November 4th, 2024

I am enchanted with the entire Haven exhibition, but I can’t help but have some favorite pieces. Here are two for this month's spotlight.

Eric’s sculpture, Sandcastle, initially drew me in with its interplay of light and shadow. Made from simple materials like sticks and clothespins, it feels both structured and free-form, creating intricate shadows that transform with every angle. There’s a sense of fragility, almost as if the whole thing could be whisked away by a breeze—like a sandcastle by the sea. To me, it’s a reminder of how life’s moments can be temporary and delicate, and brings back memories of building sandcastles as a child and with my own kids.

One of my favorite things about David’s paintings are how much he can capture in a brush stroke. In the piece, Obstruction, Concealment, and Investigation #1, the minimal palette is dynamic and strong. I imagine this figure looking off in the distance. That could be me - thinking about what’s ahead. Or what’s coming. When I look at this work, I feel the immediacy of the brushstrokes. There is a certain melancholy, but I also feel the openness of possibility. Seems apt for the moment we are in.

These two pieces are beautiful side by side, and I’d love for you to come see them up close and experience their impact firsthand.
